In the flat that evening, Jill clicked on her emails and watched as one from Linda came up. She’d read it before she went to bed, but she had been far too tired to think about replying to it. She was emotionally drained from the roller coaster of emotions she’d experienced over the weekend, from the highs of Andrew’s kiss and the day spent out in the fresh air, to the lows of his coolness and backing away from her. And worst of all, this afternoon’s scolding for not having the expenses completely accurate and up-to-date. He’d rounded it all off by telling her that Margery’s daughter would be coming out of hospital soon, and that Margery would be back at work in a week or two.

‘That will suit me fine,’ Jill had told him as she left the office. She’d buried herself in work for the rest of the day, and come home tired, and down, and with a headache threatening. All she wanted to do after her meal was to go to bed and forget about everything, even the forthcoming Caledonian Ball. Especially the Caledonian Ball. Did she really want to go to it with a man whose character changed with the wind? Who could be charming, kind and solicitous one moment, and a nagging, bad-tempered perfectionist the next? And furthermore, if she was going to be out of work in a couple of weeks, then she didn’t want to spend any of her hard-earned savings on titivating herself just to please him. As it was, with the job finishing so soon, she wouldn’t be able to afford much of a trip unless the Misses MacDonald at Elite Employment could find her something else.

She clicked on Linda’s email. Her aunt had been travelling again – this time to Darwin and to the northern national parks. She sounded as if she was having a wonderful time, camping under the stars, keeping a wary eye out for the big crocs in the creeks, learning about the indigenous culture, and no doubt collecting masses of material for her next books. Then she said,

Did you and Andrew make it to the Tattoo? I do hope so. He and Nicola always used to take me with them, and then come back for supper to the flat. It was always such fun and a great night out.

Jill read those lines again. Who was Nicola? And when did she disappear off the scene? Or was she still around? Was that what Andrew had been about to confess to her this morning before Dorothy interrupted them?

Jill switched off the computer and headed for bed. But instead of a good night’s restful sleep without even a dream to disturb it, she tossed and turned, threw off the bedclothes and rolled across the bed in a vain attempt to sleep. Her head was filled with Nicola and her relationship with Andrew. What had she meant to him? Did he still think of her? Was she beautiful? Where did
